Two decades ago, I was just a young player on the Westport High School varsity basketball team.

One of my teammates, Michael Noonan, was a legend—a sharpshooter and an all-around phenomenal player. I was there the night he broke the school's all-time scoring record, a feat that stood unchallenged for 20 years.

That all changed on Friday, February 28, 2025. Senior Owen Boudria officially surpassed Noonan’s record, cementing his place in Westport basketball history. The Westport Wildcats celebrated the milestone on the school's social media:

I caught up with Owen to get his thoughts on the achievement.

When I asked what went through his mind after breaking the record, he admitted he didn’t even realize it had happened in the moment.

“We weren’t really keeping track of how many points I had. The shot I made to break the record actually tied the game with about 30 seconds left, so my focus was just on getting a stop on defense. I wasn’t thinking, Oh, I just broke the record—I was thinking, We need to win this game.”

During overtime, as his calves started cramping, Athletic Director Ms. Morse informed him that he had broken the record following a two-pointer.

Even then, his mindset remained the same: he just wanted to finish the game strong.

With the record now his, Boudria remains locked in on the season. “We play tomorrow at 7 p.m. against John Duggan Academy in Springfield. It’s the Sweet 16, so if we win, we move on to the Elite Eight. Right now, we’re just focused on that game.”

To mark the moment, I reached out to Michael Noonan to hear his thoughts on the player who had just surpassed him.

He had nothing but praise for Boudria, saying, “Owen applies pressure by showing patience on offense and attacks gaps instead of settling for threes. Many players come and go without learning the importance of mid-range play. Really nice to see… The will to win is there. The ability to get buckets is there. The athleticism is there. He’s a really balanced player. His next coach will love what he brings! Great seeing two brothers on the floor at the same time—it brings back many memories for my family and me. We’re wishing the team the best of luck going forward and Owen all the best during his college career!”

When I shared Noonan’s message with Owen, he was humbled.

“He set the bar high, and last year, I didn’t even think breaking the record was possible. Then I got injured, and it made me push even harder this year. I started the season slow, but the goal of every game was to win—and to keep tallying up points. I needed 33 to tie, 34 to pass 1,583. Even though Michael wasn’t physically there, he was pushing me the whole time. It was motivation throughout the season.”

Looking ahead, Owen is also preparing for the next chapter of his basketball career.

“Right now, I’m in talks with the University of New England and Roger Williams. I’m still undecided, but both schools would be a great fit for me. The coaches told me to focus on finishing the season, and we’ll talk afterward. But no matter where I go, I know I’ll have a great career and have a lot of fun playing basketball.”

Owen Boudria’s journey is far from over, but his name is now forever etched in Westport basketball history. With playoffs ahead and college on the horizon, there’s no telling just how far he’ll go.
