Back on October 6, the people of Westport said farewell to a town staple, Walt's Fruit Stand.

The quaint farm stand stood proud at the corner of Briggs Road and Sanford Road for generations before it was eventually bought by the adjacent church and knocked down because of its deteriorated condition. The commissioners of Our Lady of Grace Church then set about planning what to do with the space where Walt's once stood.

Back in August, Father Chris Pascal was unsure what the future of that space would be, but he has recently figured that question out. He gathered a team of volunteers who worked together to create a life-sized replica of the Nativity scene that now acts as a beacon of Christmas and hope for all who pass by.

"Some volunteers at the parish approached me about wanting to build it there and I said go for it. It was all volunteer-built," Peschel said. "They went out and found the wood, which ended up getting donated from Brightman Lumber in Assonet."
