MIDDLEBORO — Middleboro police have arrested a 20-year-old Wareham man for possessing a gun with a defaced serial number and two felony firearms charges after officers found the firearm when he was placed into protective custody on Monday.

Police said Andrew Labbe was intoxicated and refused to leave a home on Southwick Street in Middleboro when officers were called at around 10:30 p.m. Monday night.

The officers said they found him standing on the lawn, and although he told them he would order an Uber, police said his level of intoxication was such that they decided "he could not care for himself."

Labbe was taken into protective custody "for his safety and the safety of others," according to police.

But when they brought him to the station for booking, police said officers discovered an unloaded .40 caliber Glock 23 handgun with a defaced serial number inside a fanny pack he was wearing.

Labbe was arrested and the firearm was seized.

He is charged with possessing a firearm with a defaced serial number, felony possession of a firearm without a license, and felony unlawful possession of a firearm.

According to police, Labbe later posted bail and has been released pending his arraignment.

It is unclear when he is due back in court.
