A Mattapoisett-based charity group is starting off the new year by helping under-served women on the SouthCoast. Walt’s Mobile Closet has organized “Walt’s Essential Purse Project” and needs the community’s help to make their first purse drive a success.

Walt’s Mobile Closet

Walt’s Mobile Closet is a charity group that works with agencies and organizations along the SouthCoast to provide free clothing to anyone in need.

“It’s a free clothing program and we collect donations from community members,” said Whitney Tully, the Director of Walt’s Mobile Closet. “We bring our mobile closet to the clients.”

Walt’s Mobile Closet travels all over the SouthCoast, carting along racks of clothing to give struggling men, women, and children the chance to shop for free.

While the mobile closet is a free clothing program for everyone, the Essential Purse Project will cater to women and people who identify as women.

Walt’s Essential Purse Project

Walt’s Mobile Closet will be collecting women’s purses and filling them with essential items. The purses will then be distributed to under-served women in the community.

“I am looking to do, in the Spring, a women’s only event to distribute the purses,” said Tully. “Anything left over will then be given to local agencies.”

People can donate gently used purses until the end of February

“A purse is an important item to a woman, it helps us support our families and it’s nice to have a nice purse,” said Tully. “I’d like to be able to provide women with (a purse) who cannot necessarily afford a nice one and allow them to establish some self-confidence.”
