Volunteer as a ‘Good Listener’ for the Samaritans
Seeking caring, compassionate volunteers to staff the suicide prevention crisis hotline for Samaritans of Fall River and New Bedford. Each volunteer participates in a mandatory 35-hour training program which includes working with a trained volunteer. The training sessions are scheduled for November 2019 and February 2020. Volunteers are asked to cover a 5-hour shift or two 2.5 hour shifts weekly. A minimum of a six-month commitment is expected.
Volunteers may be asked to participate in local health fairs on behalf of the agency. Internship and work-study are offered to college students as well. Prospective volunteers must also undergo a background check as part of the application process.
- Volunteers should be between the ages of 18 and 100.

According to LighterBlue.com, Depression (MDD) can come with many possible symptoms, including:
- Feeling sad
- Losing interest
- Sleeping too little or too much
- Trouble concentrating
- Tired a lot
- Restlessness or moving slowly
- Change in weight or appetite
- Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
- Thoughts of suicide

The Crisis Hotline is anonymous and free of charge and available from 8 am to 11 pm, 7 days a week depending on the availability of volunteers within that period. From time to time, there may be gaps in volunteer coverage.
