United Way of Greater Fall River Donates $78,000 in Food Grants In Honor of Hunger Action Month
The United Way of Greater Fall River stepped up in a big way this month to ensure local families have access to healthy, affordable food. In honor of Hunger Action Month, the organization is providing $78,000 in food grants, a 46% increase in funding from last year.
What Is the United Way of Greater Fall River?
The United Way of Greater Fall River is a non-profit organization that fights for the health, education, financial stability and basic needs of everyone in Greater Fall River. For the past 75 years, they have given struggling families a chance to thrive.
The Issue of Food Insecurity on the SouthCoast
According to UWGFR, one in 14 families suffers from food insecurity on the SouthCoast. In Fall River, 18% fall below the federal poverty line, and with the impact of inflation, more families are making the difficult decision to spend money on meals or bills.
Springing Into Action for Hunger Action Month
While the organization tackles several areas in the community, United Way has made a special commitment to families and the elderly who are hungry and need shelter. With the help of community donors, corporate partners, Bank5 and BayCoast Bank, United Way of Greater Fall River is providing $78,000 in food grants to area food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and outreach programs that address hunger and homelessness in the Greater Fall River area.
“These grants are to food distribution partners in every one of the cities and towns we serve, in response to an increased need for inventory and supplies due to the impact of the current economy on an ever-growing number of families who can’t afford basic needs,” said the organization.
Over 22,000 households will receive assistance as a direct result of the food grants.
UWGFR continues to make a difference in the lives of others, and as Hunger Action Month comes to a close, their efforts will not, as they aim to create a brighter future for those who need it most.
