New Bedford kids at elementary schools including the Charles Ashley, Carlos Pacheco, and Ellen Hathaway Elementary Schools are encouraged to participate in the annual “Walk/Bike to School Day”. Walk/Bike to School Day is also designed to raise public awareness about the importance of safe roads and pedestrian safety.

New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell is scheduled to join the Ashley School students at 7:45 a.m. and participate in the walk. The Ashley School is the spotlight school this year.

Massachusetts Walk and Bike to School Day happens annually on the first Wednesday of May and celebrates the efforts of hundreds of schools currently involved in Safe Routes to School programs in Massachusetts. Safe Routes programs help to establish healthy lifetime habits for students, increase children’s independence, help them arrive at school ready to learn, and teach safe pedestrian, bicyclist, and driver skills.
