Drive-in movie theaters are more relevant than ever in the age of the pandemic.

We've spotlighted a number of different drive-ins over the years, but all of them have the same drawback. Between the North Smithfield, Mendon and Wellfleet drive-ins, they are all over an hour away from most of the SouthCoast.

Until today.

We've got some good news to report. The local drive-in scene just got a little closer, and we'll take it.

The Showcase Cinemas de Lux located at Patriot Place is announcing the launch of a new pop-up drive-in. If it's been too long since you've been to a movie, this is your chance to experience some fan favorites from the comfort and safety of your own car. The best part is, you're looking at about a 45-minute ride to Foxboro minus all of the usual Patriots traffic we usually experience when trying to make our way down Route 1 to the stadium.

Their first movie at the pop-up drive-in will be this Saturday night, and apparently the people of Massachusetts have a deep thirst for some entertainment. Tickets to see Raiders of the Lost Ark sold out in just minutes. After this weekend, the Patriot Place pop-up drive-in will feature movies for the first three Friday nights in June: Onward next Friday night, June 5, followed by Trolls World Tour on June 12 and Sonic the Hedgehog on June 19.

Tickets are $20 per auto and all shows will start at sunset (approximately 8:45 p.m.). Concessions for pop-up drive-in guests are available for pre-order and curbside pick-up via the Showcase Cinemas app.
