Fall River Venue Launches First Indoor Rock-Throwing Experience East of the Mississippi

FALL RIVER (WBSM) — Just as it did nearly a decade ago early in the axe-throwing craze, a Fall River business is bringing a new object-throwing experience to the SouthCoast.

Stumpy’s Hatchet House has launched the Rock Pit, an indoor rock-throwing experience.

Stumpy’s was on the forefront of axe throwing, opening one of the first venues for it in Massachusetts back in 2019. Now, it is offering only the second rock-throwing experience in the country, and the only one east of the Mississippi River.

What is the Rock Pit Indoor Rock-Throwing Game?

Rock throwing is exactly as it sounds: launching rocks at cans, action figures, vehicles, seasonal objects, and other unexpected targets. Each item carries a point value, allowing players to keep score and compete against one another or their own personal best.

"We wanted to take something almost everyone remembers doing as a kid and turn it into an adult-sized arcade experience," Stumpy’s co-owner Kimberly Besse said in a release. "The Rock Pit is simple, competitive and a little ridiculous in the best possible way. You do not need any experience. You just need to be ready to throw, laugh and keep score."

In addition to scoring points, rock throwers can target some fun features to heighten the experience (and their scores).

“Signature challenges can help players build their scores or lose them entirely,” Stumpy’s said. “Guests can knock down Sasquatch to win an instant prize, activate a roaring dinosaur for one of the game's highest point values or avoid hitting ‘Jack,’ the lumberjack whammy target that wipes out accumulated points.”

Pricing and Bucket Options for the Rock Pit

The Rock Pit can be added on to a hatchet or knife throwing visit, or you can come in just to throw rocks. Buckets of rocks are available for $10 or $15.

Safety Rules and Guidelines for Rock Throwing

As with every experience at Stumpy’s, safety is first and foremost. “Participants receive instructions, wear safety glasses and throw one rock at a time from behind a designated barrier,” Stumpy’s said. “Only Stumpy's staff members may enter the target area to reset the game.”

In addition to the Rock Pit and the hatchet throwing experiences, Stumpy’s also features knife throwing, darts, foosball, giant games, and StumPuck, best described as a type of table hockey.
