It’s that time of year, when Spooky Season kicks off even as we are sweating through the month of August with the grand opening of many Spirit Halloween stores.

I, for one, could not be more excited. With apologies to Andy Williams, it's the most wonderful time of the year.

Some say it’s way too soon to see Halloween costumes, animatronics, props and creepy decorations already on the shelves before the kids are even back to school. Others, like me, wish Spirit Halloween stores were open year-round.

Massachusetts will have 28 Spirit Halloween stores open this fall, and we have the rundown of where they will all be located. One is already open, while a majority will be opening up sometime this month, depending on how quickly they are stocked and staffed. One more will open in September, and then a handful are listed as “coming soon,” with no definitive start month named.

How Spirit Halloween Became a Seasonal Icon

Spirit Halloween began as a pop-up store in New Jersey in 1983. Original founder Joseph Marver was able to expand to 60 stores before he sold the chain to Spencer Gifts (now known as Spencer’s) in 1999. Since then, it has expanded to more than 1,400 stores in North America, and we’re lucky enough to have a couple dozen of them right here in Massachusetts.

Why Shopping In-Store Still Matters for Halloween

Of course, Spirit Halloween also sells its complete inventory (and then some) on its website, but the whole fun of shopping with them is visiting those brick-and-mortar stores and seeing the animatronic scenes and set-ups, the costumes worn by the staff, and never knowing exactly what you might find on the shelves this year. In the era of online shopping and digital dominance, it’s one of the only real in-person shopping experiences we have left.

LOOK: How Halloween has changed in the past 100 years

Stacker compiled a list of ways that Halloween has changed over the last 100 years, from how we celebrate it on the day to the costumes we wear trick-or-treating. We’ve included events, inventions, and trends that changed the ways that Halloween was celebrated over time. Many of these traditions were phased out over time. But just like fake blood in a carpet, every bit of Halloween’s history left an impression we can see traces of today.
