It's a SouthCoast tradition to take the plunge into the freezing waters on New Year's Day, and we have the roundup of places where you can take a dip.

Over recent years, there have been lots of articles showing the health benefits of doing cold plunges but I still can't stomach why people would voluntarily do this. The temperature on Wednesday may be hovering around 50 degrees but the water will be decidedly colder.

In previous years, we have had options when it comes to where we do our polar plunge.

Grab your trunks and your bravery and head over to Fort Phoenix on the first of the year for the Phoenix Polar Plunge. The plunge starts at 10 a.m. in case you want to be with a few hundred other people that are braving the cold. It's important to note that proceeds are going to fund scholarships for local students.

If Fairhaven isn't your jam there are several other plunges happening around the SouthCoast and the surrounding area.

Newport County will hold a polar plunge at Easton Beach on New Year's Day and proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Little Compton is also having a Polar Plunge at noon.

Provincetown will host its Ninth Annual Polar Bear Plunge. Those taking part will meet at Johnston Street parking lot for a noon plunge. Proceeds will go to the Center for Coastal Studies. They actually have a "virtual" way you can participate, which I'm curious how they execute.

So how many of you are "taking the plunge" this year and heading to one of these locations?

From personal experience, I think I can last maybe 30 seconds. I can't seem to get my breathing under control. If you have done it, before I'd like to hear your experience and if you will ever do it again.
