The SouthCoast is aching for a Dairy Queen.  Why don't we have one?  Why can't there be a Dairy Queen near me?

Bring Us the Blizzards: Why Chipotle Isn’t the Win We Wanted

A couple of weeks ago on the MGM Show, we were talking about how disappointed we all were that the newly cleared space on King’s Highway in New Bedford will be filled with an unexciting Chipotle.

I know we don’t get a say in what gets developed in our area, but if we did, the consensus would be that Chipotle wouldn’t crack the Top 10 for the former King’s Highway Newport Creamery location. Honestly, it's nothing against Chipotle, it's just that we already have them here on the SouthCoast.

SouthCoast’s Ice Cream Gap: Dairy Queen is Still Frozen Out

What would I like to see opened in that space? Something that the SouthCoast has been missing for as long as I can remember.  We need a Dairy Queen.

Why has Dairy Queen ignored the SouthCoast for all these years? What have we done to deserve this? The SouthCoast is well represented with local, mom-and-pop ice cream shops. Some of those shops even make their own ice cream, so there's no danger that Dairy Queen would be the best ice cream on the SouthCoast.

But there’s something about a good old-fashioned Dairy Queen. There’s really nothing like it. It’s got a different texture than traditional soft serve ice cream, and the Dairy Queen Blizzards are truly incomparable.

A One-Hour Drive for a Blizzard? Really?

The problem is that the nearest Dairy Queen to the SouthCoast is all the way in Middleboro. That’s a solid one-hour round trip just to get an ice cream, which is kind of crazy. Instead, you have to cash in on opportunities when you're already nearby. I rarely take Route 495 past Middleboro without a quick stop at Dairy Queen.  It's kind of a problem.

While I love the Dairy Queens that sell those delicious cheeseburgers and fries alongside Blizzards, I’d even settle for a scaled-down version like the one in Middleboro that only serves ice cream.
