Thanks to you, the spring Hunger Heroes Food Drop will feed hundreds of SouthCoast children who would otherwise go hungry during the upcoming April vacation.

Last weekend, Fun 107 and WBSM asked you to come out to Aldi's at Dartmouth Mall to donate snacks to United Way of Greater New Bedford in its quest to keep local children fed.

Volunteers collected a total of 1,200 pounds at the two-hour drive.

That's amazing and will no doubt be a big help to students who normally rely on school-made meals for daily fuel.

United Way Vice President of Marketing and Community Engagement Victoria Grasela said several other drives helped to collect a couple of thousand more pounds Yes, our Hunger Heroes Food Drop was just one of 30 food drives that United Way oversees to help SouthCoast kids in need.

This weekend, about 180 volunteers will pack the food into drawstring backpacks. Then, delivery to New Bedford, Fairhaven, Freetown and Wareham schools will happen next week. The schools will distribute to those students in greatest need just in time for the school vacation week.

While the food drives are all wrapped up, Grasela wants to remind people donations can still be made on the United Way website. She also reminded us that United Way is always in need of more volunteers.

Again, a big thank you to everyone that donated.
