The SouthCoast Needs More Ginger Ice Cream Spots
The SouthCoast is blessed with numerous spots where you can get some of the very best ice cream that will ever cross your lips. Trust me, I know, I’ve tried a lot of it. I am an ice cream fanatic, and we know many of you are, too. That’s one of the reasons why we put out our annual SouthCoast Ice Cream Card each summer.
Today’s ice cream fans are spoiled, though, by the hundreds of flavors of ice cream available at so many of these locations. In fact, I’m fairly certain that if you can imagine a flavor in your mind, Acushnet Creamery can find a way to make it happen, and they’re not the only ones. Innovative flavors pop up every season across the region.
One flavor that we don’t see enough of, however, is one of my personal all-time favorites: ginger ice cream.
If you’ve never had it, ginger ice cream has the sweet flavor you’d expect from a vanilla ice cream spiked with the sharp bite of pieces of real ginger. If you like ginger ale, you’ll like ginger ice cream.
However, the ice cream flavor that was hard enough to find in my youth has become even more scarce in the 21st century.
As a kid, I remember most ice cream stands I visited having pretty much just the standard flavors. You’d have chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and if you were lucky, maybe they had coffee ice cream or if it was soft serve, they offered a chocolate-vanilla twist. If you wanted a variety of flavors, you went to Friendly’s.
There was one ice cream stand we would visit, however, that had ginger ice cream, and my mom always ordered it. It was Welcome Farm in Weymouth, which stood out to us kids because of the cow on the roof but where my mom would pick to go because of the ginger ice cream. I soon developed a taste for it as well, and also realized it was a rarity to find it on a menu even back then.
These days, we’re lucky to have ginger ice cream on a few SouthCoast ice cream menus. From personal experience, I’ve found it at Gray’s in Tiverton, Handy Hill in Westport, Erickson’s in Carver and Oxford Creamery in Mattapoisett.
Where else do you know that carries ginger ice cream? Are you a fan of it as well?
