Samaritans Southcoast is providing help to people around the state, answering 9-8-8 calls, chats and texts from those who may feel suicidal, depressed, or struggling with other mental health issues.

Samaritans Executive Director Darcy Lee is asking for your help to keep the mission on track. She stopped by Townsquare Sunday to share information about an upcoming fundraiser and remind us that September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

"It's a month where we can raise awareness, break down the stigma, and make sure that everyone knows they are not alone," she said.

Answering the Call: 24/7 Support Across Massachusetts

Samaritans Southcoast has a staff of 70 people answering calls, texts and chats seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Each person must undergo at least 48 hours of training before being allowed to answer calls.

Breaking the Stigma Through Community and Laughter

The Samaritans fundraiser is a comedy show, "Stand Up for Every Voice," at White's of Westport on Friday, September 18. Tickets are available online at whitesofwestport.com.

"Laughter brings the community together," Lee said. "When we come together around laughter, we are breaking down that stigma around suicide and mental health."

Where the Funds Go: Sustaining Safe Place and Outreach

Lee said money raised through the fundraiser will help pay for technology and equipment, the Samaritans Safe Place program for survivors of loss, and outreach activities, including bullying-prevention programs.

It can take a great deal of courage for people to call 9-8-8 and talk about their problems, but Samaritans Southcoast has many ways to help.

"We listen and provide support for you, and we can get you to other places where you can access the support you need," Lee said.
