MIDDLEBORO (WBSM) — A man was rescued from a South Middleboro home last night as firefighters battled a major two-alarm blaze.

Middleboro Fire Chief Owen Thompson reported that the department received a report of a structure fire at 6 Locust Street at about 9:15 p.m. Monday. Six minutes after receiving the report, the first engine company arrived to find the first floor of the two-story home fully involved in intense fire.

Residents at the scene told firefighters they believed the occupant was still inside the home. Thompson said firefighters made an aggressive search and were able to locate and remove the sole occupant of the home, a 67-year-old man, through a side entrance.

The man was transported to Rhode Island Hospital by ambulance. His condition is unknown at this time.

“Middleborough Firefighters Local 3653 displayed incredible courage and team work to find and remove the occupant,” Chief Thompson said.

Fire crews from Lakeville, Bridgewater, Carver and Wareham also assisted in battling the blaze.

According to Thompson, crews will remain on the scene through this morning to extinguish any hot spots. He said the State Fire Marshal is currently investigating the cause of the fire, which does not appear to be intentional at this time.
