The UMass Dartmouth Observatory and the Astronomical Society of Southern New England (ASSNE) are pleased to invite the university community and the public to their free spring night-sky observation sessions at the campus observatory. Viewing will take place through the observatory's 16-inch telescope and other telescopes operated by ASSNE members.

For spring 2019, the Observatory is scheduled to hold observation sessions on:

  • Saturday, March 30, at 8 pm
  • Saturday, April 27, at 8:30 pm
  • Saturday, May 18, at 8:30 pm

The UMass Dartmouth Observatory is located in the field to the right of the main campus entrance off 285 Old Westport Road in Dartmouth. Parking is available in designated spaces on the campus Ring Road or in Lot 17. Admission is free. Children are welcome to attend if accompanied by an adult.

Observation sessions only take place when weather permits (clear skies necessary). In the event of cancellation, an announcement will be available HERE before each event at 5 pm.

This Meetup group is for MA/RI community members who have an interest in astronomy. Please sign up with the group to get notices of new events; RSVP for events you are interested in to get reminders (and in some cases, space is limited). Nearly all events are free (workshops may have materials costs).

ASSNE's motto is to “to educate and inspire” and we have a passion for showing the night sky to as many people as possible and firing their enthusiasm for astronomy. On a volunteer basis, ASSNE members host public observing nights, give astronomy talks and demonstrations, and teach workshops on observing and using astronomy equipment. - Astronomical Society of Southern New England (ASSNE)

If you are not a member of ASSNE but have a telescope or pair of binoculars, feel free to bring it to any of their events, or go to an ASSNE club meeting in order to learn how to use it. You do not need to know anything about astronomy, own any equipment, or pay dues to attend ASSNE public meetups. Just go to enjoy the night sky, and they will happily answer your questions.
