Sergeant Luke Joeseph Edward Carreiro was and will always be a Hero. Sadness has draped the Southcoast from the news of his passing. Luke was only 26 years old.

Let the record show that these blogs in particular are never easy to write, but I feel the need to  shine light on this local soldier.

Farewells are never easy. Regardless of the situaiton, it is never a simple task and the closer you are to someone can very well make saying Goodbye a difficult task.

While serving his County, Luke was stationed down at the Army Military Base in Fort Bragg, North Carolina and served in the Iraqi Freedom War. His death is still unknown.

Luke was a friend of mine and a teammate on the soccer field. The very thought of him gone is numbing. He was a good man and well educated- graduating high school in 2007 with honors.

Luke and I attended Westport High School together and played on the same soccer team together. He was a quick and effective goalie who had a passion for the sport.

The news still doesn’t make sense to me. Questions of his death resound in my head like a hurricane of confusion and doubt. “Too soon….” I keep telling myself, “He was far too young to leave this world.”

Along with his family and friends, Luke is leaving behind his wife, Michelle (Kirkland) Carreiro.

In closing, All i have left to say is this: Life after High School is an unpaved path. It’s up to each and everyone of us to build our own walkway. Whether you choose to continue your education or join the Military, you still have to start somewhere. Luke chose the selfless route and joined the Army with one mission…. Protect the United States of America.

Anybody who wishes to pay their respects to Luke and the Carreiro family can do so this Sunday (December 13th, 2015) for Calling Hours at the Hathaway Home for Funerals, 1813 Robeson Street in Fall River from 1-5 PM.

All who wish to attend his funeral can go to Holy Trinity Church, 951 Stafford Road in Fall River on Monday, December 14th, 2015 at 10:15 AM.

Sgt. Carreirro’s ashes will finally be laid down to rest in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.

You will be greatly missed, Luke…. Thank You for your Service.
