Ladies, I feel your pain. No, I actually feel your pain.

I was invited by Avalon Medical Spa to try out their new CoolTone muscle toning machine.

I'm not going to lie, I was nervous about it. While I loved the idea of getting in the equivalent of 25,000 sit-ups in a 30-minute session, I was concerned about the sensation (or more specifically, the pain) that my body would feel.

CoolTone is actually remarkable. It can help tone up your butt and thighs and give you a six-pack even if you're not genetically programmed for one. I saw some before and after photos of some local SouthCoast people that were jaw-dropping.

The Avalon Medical Spa staff assured me that the technology had actually been around for quite some time. It was originally used as a medical tool to stimulate muscles in people who were suffering from degenerative conditions.

They smiled and told me that this would be the closest I'd ever feel to labor contractions. That didn't calm my fears.

I could feel the butterflies in my stomach as the Avalon staff fastened the CoolTone device to my abdominal area.

They told me that they were going to start off in a very low setting and slowly raise the intensity of the treatment. Here's a video of me during the introductory level:

We were about halfway through the session when they started to slowly ramp up. I had been at about 40 percent intensity and they slowly built up to 75 percent.

Avalon told me that normally first-time users might be able to tolerate up to roughly 60 percent. It is just like any other type of muscle building. There is a certain amount of build-up that must occur before peak performance can be reached.

After the original session was over, I asked them to hook me up again and take it to 100 percent. Here is what happened:

As far as the labor contractions? I'm sure that what I felt during the treatment is equivalent to a sample size that you might try at BJ's Wholesale Club. I know what it tastes like, but I have no idea what it's like to eat the whole meal. And I'm OK with that.
