New Voting Devices Spark Questions In Rochester

A set of newly donated voting devices is generating both gratitude and concern in  Rochester.

The town recently received about 400 handheld remotes designed to help streamline the voting process at town meetings. The system allows residents to cast simple yes or no votes electronically, with results calculated instantly.

Anonymous Donation Raises Eyebrows

The devices, valued at approximately $18,000, were provided through a grant from an anonymous donor. According to Town Administrator Cam Durant, the donor specifically selected Rochester as one of just three communities to receive the equipment.

"I don't think the donor's identity will ever be known," said Durant.

While the donation may sound like a win on paper, the anonymity of the donor has sparked online speculation. Some residents have taken to social media to question where the devices came from and whether there could be a hidden motive.

How The Devices Actually Work

Durant emphasized that the technology is much simpler than some people may think.

“This is not like a traditional ballot system,” he explained. “It’s literally just a remote with a yes or no button. It calculates the vote on screen.”

At town meetings, votes are typically determined by a visual estimate, with the moderator judging whether a majority or two thirds threshold has been met. The new system could provide a more precise count and eliminate guesswork.

Will Rochester Use Them Right Away

Despite the potential benefits, residents will not see the devices in action just yet.

Town officials say they plan to hold off on using the system until more training and due diligence is completed. The town moderator will ultimately decide when the devices are introduced, possibly at a future town meeting.

A Common Tool In Other Communities

While the concept may be new to Rochester, it is not entirely uncommon. Durant noted that nearby towns, including Carver, already use similar systems to speed up meetings and improve accuracy.

Still, in today’s climate, even a straightforward upgrade can raise questions. For now, town officials say they are focused on transparency and making sure residents understand exactly how the system works before it is put into use.
