When it comes to how much money people earn each year, those living in the Southcoast area tend to be lower than most of the Bay State.
As a matter of fact, the cities of New Bedford and Fall River are among the 10 poorest cities in Massachusetts, according to massbenchmarks.org. But we need to keep in mind that the cost of housing tends to be lower here on the SouthCoast than is many other parts of the state.
People who live in Marion have, on average, the highest incomes in this area, and those living in New Bedford have the lowest. On the list of 351 communities, here's how those on the SouthCoast ranked:
Marion is number 65, with a median income of $45,269 per person and a household income of $92,258 annually.
Rochester is number 135, with a median income of $37,340 per person and a household income of $104,300 annually.
Mattapoisett is number 155, with a median income of $35,941 per person and a household income of $93,235.
Westport is number 176, with a median income of $35,249 and a household income of $91,381.
Freetown is number 242, with a median income of $32,095 and a household income of $91,365.
