MIDDLEBOROUGH — A report of an attempted abduction in Middleborough is untrue and there is no danger to the public, according to police.

Middleborough Police Chief Joseph Perkins says the Middleborough Police Department "has determined that a woman's story about an attempted abduction was untrue" after an investigation into the original report.

The woman told police that a man in a red van had pulled up alongside her as she was walking on Clay Street at about 12:45 p.m. on Monday. The woman claimed that the driver exited his vehicle and grabbed her from behind in an attempt to pull her into his van. She told police she was able to escape before calling police.

Chief Perkins says his department has determined that the reported incident did not occur.

The matter remains under investigation. No charges have been announced.

The 27-year-old Middleborough woman who made the report has not been publicly identified by police.
