A woman is undergoing treatment for rabies after she was bitten and scratched by a raccoon Thursday morning.

Mattapoisett Animal Control Officer Kathy Massey told the Standard Times she received a call around 10 a.m. about a raccoon outside the Mattapoisett Free Public Library that appeared to be sick.

Massey said she arrived at the library and heard a woman screaming after the raccoon apparently charged and bit her.

Massey and her daughter, Fairhaven Animal Control Officer Kelly Massey, went after the raccoon, which was eventually located in a tree on Beacon St.

The area was secured by police who were able to keep traffic at bay

The animal was eventually secured and its remains sent to the state for testing.
