Dighton Police say that what was thought to be an attempted abduction, may have been a misunderstanding.

A high school student told police that while he was waiting at a bus stop on the 500 block of Tremont St. Wednesday morning a man in an SUV approached him.

The boy heard the man mention puppy and ran home.

After making a public announcement about the incident a man came forward saying that he was the young man's neighbor and that he approached him to tell him that his yellow lab puppy may have run into the young man's yard.

Police say the man also spoke with the boy's family and following an interview police say that both investigators and the young man's family have concluded that this " a complete misunderstanding of words."

While the situation was a misunderstanding police say that the young man did "exactly what he was supposed to given what he thought he had heard."

Police also say it is still vitally important that parents speak with their children about being careful around strangers and that if they are approached by someone they don't know they should notify a responsible adult immediately.

Dighton Police say they will continue to have officers on patrol during bus pick-ups and drop-offs to try and ensure the highest sense of security that can be provided.
