After years of strict rules on indoor photography at the Newport mansions, guests will soon be able to snap photos of their own.

The Preservation Society of Newport County has decided to loosen their rules on indoor photography of the historic houses, though it only pertains to smartphones.

Visitors at The Breakers, The Elms and Marble House can now use their phones to snap photos during tours as long as they are for personal use only. You can't use flash photography, tripods or selfie sticks however.

The change goes into affect this Friday during the Newport Winter Festival.

Similar changes will likely be approved for the Kingscote and Chateau-sur-Mer mansions when they open in March.
