Looking for something to do this weekend?

Head to Newport.

You may have done the Cliff Walk, the beaches or even your favorite restaurants recently, but weekends in March offer a fun way to experience Rhode Island's City by the Sea: on foot.

Take a Walking Tour of Newport

The Newport Historical Society has a variety of walking tours where guests can expect to learn a lot.

"We offer more than a dozen walking tours year-round with a regularly updated lineup covering everything from the American Revolution to Black history to Prohibition and even custom, private tours," said Lauren Craig, Membership Engagement and Social Media Coordinator for the Society.

"Each of these tours is led by a trained and knowledgeable guide who brings Newport history to life in an immersive experience that features fascinating stories about the city's past and how it continues to influence our life and culture today," Craig said.

It's a beautiful way to see the buildings and walk the cobblestone while taking in new information. Just make sure you dress the part; I mean, it is March in New England.

What to Wear

"We recommend comfortable walking shoes, especially for the cobblestoned streets, as well as weather-appropriate clothing, and sunscreen or a hat in the summer," Craig said.

Tours last anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes and cover about a mile of ground in downtown Newport. The Newport Historical Society has been offering its tours for over 20 years. During that time, the tours have gained recognition from locals, vacation-goers and various publications.

"These tours continue to be one of the most popular ways in which tourists and Rhode Islanders alike experience and engage with local history," Craig said.

A Tour You Will Love

"Whether you're a history buff or an art lover, a tourist or a teacher, or you're just curious about the past, the Newport Historical Society team is here to help you get answers," Craig said. "We love what we do, and we invite everyone to come learn, preserve and celebrate history with us."

30 Things To Do in Newport Any Time of Year

Newport has always been seen as a summer destination. Wealthy New Yorkers used to escape the city in the hotter months for this picturesque seaside spot and the label as a summer vacation destination began.

There are, however, plenty of things to do in this historic town in any season and we've found a few that you may want to try the next time you head to Newport.
