New Bedford’s Zeiterion Picks Contractor for Theater Renovations
Nearly a year after the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center closed for major renovations, construction is ready to start.
The downtown New Bedford theater told supporters in a late May email that after some delays, it has named Colantonio Inc. the general contractor for the $30 million project.
"Now that we are back on track, we will officially break ground in June," Z officials wrote.
Holliston-based Colantonio has been around for over 40 years, and boasts schools, libraries, apartments and the State House Senate Chamber among its many projects. Soon, it will add the Zeiterion to its portfolio as the beloved institution gets upgrades to its seating, lighting, flooring and more.
"In the coming months, we invite you to come along as we tell the story of a 100-year-old theater transforming for the next generation," Z leaders wrote. "We’ll share the progress of the renovation and restoration, ways you can support the project, and tales of surprises discovered along the way."
The Zeiterion opened in 1923, finding success as a movie house and hosting five world premieres, the most famous of which was Moby Dick starring Gregory Peck, which celebrates its 70th anniversary of filming in 2024. The Z still shows movies from time to time but is today known for hosting some of the top touring live shows in the country.
While the Purchase Street theater is closed for renovations, the Zeiterion continues to host events throughout the SouthCoast.
