WAREHAM (WBSM) — A New Bedford man is in custody after he allegedly fired a gun inside a Wareham hotel in the vicinity of children and narrowly missing police officers.

According to Wareham Police Chief Walter Correia, officers responded on August 23 at about 8:03 p.m. to a report of possible gunshots in the cranberry bogs behind the Marriott Town Place Suites at 50 Rosebrook Way.

Hotel management told arriving officers about suspicious activity involving a guest who entered the hotel after returning from the bog area. He was later identified as Scott Desimas of New Bedford.

Correia said that when officers tried to make contact with Desimas in his room, three gunshots were fired from inside the room through the door. He said two of the shots “narrowly missed the officers and traveled through a wall, behind which a pool was occupied by two children and one adult.”

Correia said another adult and child sitting by the pool saw debris fall into the pool, which was later determined to be sidewall material dislodged by bullets. The two rounds shot through the wall were located in the pool, and the third round was located inside the doorframe of the hotel room.

No one was injured and Desimas exited the room shortly after the gunfire and was taken into custody without incident.

A search of the room turned up a rifle and a handgun. Correia said at the time of the shooting, the room was occupied by a woman and two young children, who were safely escorted from the premises.

Desimas is being held on $250,000 bail and will be arraigned Monday in Wareham Fourth District Court on the following charges: four counts of assault to murder while armed with a firearm, one count of discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of a building, two counts of reckless endangerment of a child, three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, and two counts of possession of a firearm with an FID card, subsequent offense.

Correia said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
