New Bedford Gets a New Supermarket as Vicente’s Opens
New Bedford welcomed Vicente's Supermarket on Friday, December 13 and I couldn't help but notice something about its signage.
As we all continue to complain about the price of eggs and milk, another supermarket has opened up in New Bedford, located at the corner of Mt. Pleasant Street at Nauset Street. It has all the items one would come to expect when making a grocery trip with a local flare.
Competition in the grocery world is heating up and all of the markets are working to stand out. Let's face it, some of us will go out of our way to get a better deal on groceries.
As I drove by the newly-opened Vicente's Supermarket, I couldn't help but notice the colors of their logo. It probably seems pretty unimportant to most people but I could have sworn I was driving by a Shaw's.
I'm sure there's a lot of research done to develop these signs and logos as well as lots of legal red tape to get through so I don't doubt that they made the right decision; after all; I know nothing about opening a business, never mind a grocery story.
Vicente's is known for having grocery items that would appeal to the local culture, including Cape Verdean, Portuguese and Italian foods at this particular location. Its slogan, "Where You Feel at Home," means they have all the items to make Grandma's recipe for the holidays.
The New Bedford location marks the third Vicente's location in Massachusetts. There are two locations in Brockton, as well as one located in Rhode Island.
Jason Barboza is one of the owners and confirmed with me that this supermarket is family-owned, and yes, the family lives right here in Massachusetts. They had been wanting to bring a location to New Bedford for some time.
The prices appear to be competitive and similar to other supermarkets. Vicente's will release a weekly ad showcasing its best deals on popular items.
Now back to the logo: am I the only one seeing the similarity?
