United Way Offers Free Produce and $2.5K Grants for Local Projects
The United Way of Greater New Bedford's Mobile Market program is providing an important service for families on the SouthCoast. The Changemaker Grants help local residents address issues that could make their neighborhoods or city better places to live.
Victoria Grasela, the United Way's Vice President of Marketing and Community Engagement, stopped by Townsquare Sunday to outline both programs and explain how you can get involved.
"This is our 11th season for Mobile Markets," Grasela said. "It's a way to get free, fresh produce into the hands of people who need it the most."
How Mobile Markets Help SouthCoast Families
The United Way partners with the YMCA Sharing the Harvest Community Farm at the Dartmouth YMCA to distribute free fresh produce to families after regular business hours.
Where and When to Find Mobile Market Locations
Food distribution happens from July to mid-October at the Wareham Middle School on Tuesdays, and in New Bedford on Thursdays at two Bank Five locations, 1724 Acushnet Avenue and 160 County Street, on alternating weeks. All Mobile Markets run from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The United Way asks that folks pre-register for the program online at UnitedWayofGNB.org.
What Is the Changemaker Grant Program?
Grasela said the Changemaker Grant program has been around for 30 years. Whether it's starting a neighborhood cleanup, or solving a long-standing issue on your street, the Changemaker program is there to provide resources to make it happen.
"We're empowering volunteer groups to create change by providing them with grants of up to $2,500 to get the job done," she said. "Spreading the word about the program is so important because many people don't know where to start on something like this."
How to Apply for a Changemaker Grant
Applications for Changemaker funding are due by August 11. You can learn more by calling the United Way office or visiting the United Way website.
Why United Way Is Unique Among Its Peers
"This is such a cool thing," Grasela said. "We are the only United Way that does this. We want volunteer groups in Greater New Bedford to come see us and apply for a grant for something you want to see changed."
