If you frequent Route 18 southbound in New Bedford, you've likely noticed the quirky "cup signs" decorating the chain link fences along the overpasses and parallel streets.

These signs, created by placing plastic cups into the fence, usually share religious messages — reminders to "Trust in God" or "Pray for Peace." But on a recent drive home, one sign caught my eye for a different reason.

What once read "God Can" and "Trust in God" had been mysteriously altered to say "Trust in Gary."

Naturally, this unexpected change piqued my curiosity. I couldn't help but wonder: Who is Gary, and why should I trust him? The sign, located along the Purchase Street fence line near the Dunkin’ parking lot, seemed like a prime target for someone with a mischievous sense of humor. Was this was a prank or a sincere message? I had to know more.

As I circled back for a closer look, my mind raced through possibilities. Could this Gary be a local figure? A spiritual leader? Was it a reference to Gary from MTV’s Teen Mom? Gary Busey? Gary the snail from SpongeBob SquarePants?

A quick search led me to a definition of the name Gary on the website Seven Reflections. According to the interpretation, Gary is a name associated with introspection, prophecy and a strong sense of responsibility. People named Gary, the site claims, are deep thinkers driven by justice and truth — a fitting profile for someone we'd be asked to trust.

Really, I've been left with more questions than answers.

If anyone has any insights or knows the story behind this mysterious "Gary," I invite you to reach out. Let's solve this New Bedford mystery together. Email me at Gazelle@Fun107.com.

In the meantime, I'll keep my eyes peeled for any more cup sign surprises on my commute.

Who knows what the next message might say?
