New Bedford Street Cordoned Off for Suspicious Item

NEW BEDFORD — Shoppers at the New Bedford Market Basket may have been surprised to find one of the store's access points blocked by police tape late Monday morning.

New Bedford police and fire departments cordoned off a small section of Sawyer Street near Market Basket on Monday for a report of a suspicious item that turned out to be harmless, according to city Fire Chief Scott Kruger.

Just before noon yesterday, emergency crews responded to the report of the item, which according to unconfirmed scanner reports looked like a pressure cooker.

Kruger said access to the area was briefly restricted as a precaution.

An investigation ultimately found the item to be harmless, he said.

A Market Basket employee confirmed over the phone that the supermarket remained open during the incident.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor's Consumer Price Index (CPI), nearly everything at the supermarket is up from where it was a year ago.
