On Monday, May 10, the streets of New Bedford's West End were filled with police officers who were showing support for their fallen brother, New Bedford Sgt. Michael Cassidy.

Cassidy served the city for many years and accumulated several awards for his outstanding police work, dedication and loyalty to the New Bedford Police Department. Unfortunately, Cassidy lost his battle with COVID-19 on April 28 at the age of 52.

Law enforcement officers from all over the state joined together, side by side, to march down Parker and Park Streets to honor their brother in blue as they passed through a crowd of spectators. Together they paraded through the entrance way of Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals to show their respects to Cassidy, his family and friends.

Local police departments, Massachusetts state troopers and sheriff's deputies filed one by one, sharing the road in unity. New Bedford led the pack, followed by Westport, Fairhaven, Acushnet, Halifax, Dartmouth, and many more. Fire departments and detectives were mixed in between, all to complete a task of unity.

A private funeral for Cassidy will continue tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 230 Bonney Street. Services will be streamed live on the Facebook page of Cassidy's wife, Debbie.
