NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford Police are releasing few details about a possible shooting Wednesday night on Locust Street.

Scanner reports came in around 8:19 p.m. Wednesday of a single gunshot fired in the area of 550 Cottage Street. According to the scanner, the city's Shot Spotter gunshot detection system picked up the gunshot.

A few moments later, there was another scanner report indicating that a resident at 69 Locust Street had reported a bullet entering the dining room of their second floor apartment.

Both locations are right on the intersection of Cottage Street and Locust Street.

The incident appeared in NBPD logs as a discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of a building, as well as two counts of malicious destruction of property over $250. According to the log, another incident of property damage at the location was reported 92 minutes after the first, and it is unclear from the log if the two incidents are related.

A police spokeswoman would only confirm that police received reports of shots fired in the area of 69 Locust Street, and stated that the incident is still under investigation.
