New Bedford Mom Gives Son a Celebrity Surprise He’ll Never Forget
Sometimes, a mom just knows how to deliver the perfect gift – even when it’s completely unplanned.
For New Bedford native Mason Sylvia, that moment came when his mother Lisa stumbled upon Hollywood icon Keith David on Martha’s Vineyard.
An Unexpected Encounter
Lisa was visiting the island with her sister and their mother, who had never been to Martha’s Vineyard before. As they explored, Lisa spotted a familiar face (and voice) in the crowd. She quickly texted Mason, who now lives in Plymouth but often visits his family back home in New Bedford.
“She asked me, ‘Who’s that actor you like? Keith something?’” Mason recalled with a laugh. “When I told her ‘Keith David,’ she replied, ‘He’s here, literally right in front of me.’ I thought she was joking.”

Lisa wasn’t joking, however. Moments later, she had Keith David on speakerphone, introducing him to her son.
A Fan’s Dream Come True
“My heart just dropped,” Mason said. “I couldn’t believe it. I started telling him how much I admired his work, and he was so kind and gracious. It wasn’t just a quick hello, he genuinely took the time to talk.”
Side note: may we never forget the time David found out he was getting a star on the Hollywood Hall of Fame. Fair warning: you may want to grab the tissues.
Mason shared that his favorite Keith David performance is in the cult classic They Live, but he also loves the actor’s voice work as Captain Anderson in the Mass Effect video game series, and as Julius in Saints Row.
“I was pacing around my house yelling, ‘I JUST TALKED TO KEITH [BLEEP] DAVID!’ for an hour,” Mason said. “I’ve met some famous people before, but never someone as iconic as him, and never outside a convention setting. This was surreal.”
A Moment for Mom, Too
Lisa didn’t just make her son’s day; she had her own starstruck moment, too.
“Keith was super kind and gracious,” she said. “He was happy to talk to Mason on the phone and take a picture with me.”
In the end, Mason walked away with an unforgettable memory, and Lisa proved that sometimes the best surprises come from simply seizing the moment.
Kudos to Mama Sylvia!
