Turning another year older was so exciting when this New Bedford man was younger but hitting this milestone birthday is a reminder he isn't young anymore.

Depending on who you talk to, turning 40 isn't "that old," especially these days with all the Botox and skin treatments you can get to attempt to look anything but your age.

I guess I should let the cat out of the bag, "the man" that is turning 40 is me. Born and raised in New Bedford and then later moving to Providence for college, and then all over the country after that, I can honestly say I have experienced some things.

We all hear the cliches of getting older, the aches and pains as well as the perks.
Looking back, there is only one saying that comes to mind: never say never.

I never thought I'd enjoy wine the way I do, or drive the car that I do. I never thought the most exciting part of my day would be getting an Amazon package or that I'd be able to travel to so many different parts of the world.

If you would have told my younger self I would get to go to all the fancy cities like Paris or Lisbon, I would have laughed.

I also remember when I first started at Fun 107 as an intern out of New Bedford High School in 2002, the countless nights I'd spend learning how to run a radio station – and here I am still doing this radio thing over 20 years later.

Some of the biggest takeaways are that life is short, the older you get the quicker time goes by, so do and say all the things you want to now. That's one of the best parts of getting older. If you want to do something, then do it, you don't need permission.

Just making it to whatever age you are at now is an accomplishment, so celebrate you as often as you can.

You will lose friends and gain friends throughout your life. Just remember we are all on our own journey's and we were lucky our paths crossed when they did.

It's true what they say, you are only as old as you feel. Some days you feel like you could rage at a Providence club like you did back in college, and most days you will be on the couch or in bed by 7: 30 p.m.

Those of you that are celebrating a milestone birthday this year or just any birthday, remember you made it this far, so enjoy that achievement.
