New Bedford Half Marathon Returning With New Traffic Concerns
The Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick are working hard to bring us the New Bedford Half Marathon again. The annual New Bedford race is always held on the third Sunday in March and is one of the oldest half marathon distance events in the Northeast.
The race is organized by the 100 percent volunteer New Bedford Half Marathon Race Committee along with the host organization, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, and with critical support from the City of New Bedford.
Why the New Bedford Half Marathon Is So Popular
The race has become a major SouthCoast running event that attracts athletes, spectators and volunteers each year. Organizers and city officials work closely together to ensure the race runs smoothly and safely for runners and residents.
Many runners use the New Bedford Half Marathon as a tune-up for the Boston Marathon, which takes place about a month later.

How Weather Can Impact Race Day
Spectators will be keeping our fingers crossed for some warmer weather that can melt snowbanks along the race route and create more viewing areas. The City typically manages snow removal along the course, but winter weather can still create challenges if storms occur close to race day.
How Route 195 Construction Could Affect Traffic
Traffic management is always a major focus of the event. Organizers aim to inconvenience residents, businesses and drivers as little as possible. However, this year presents additional logistical challenges.
Holly Huntoon, media relations specialist for the New Bedford Police Department, said residents and commuters should begin planning ahead for the March 15 race.
"One of the biggest factors this year is the ongoing (Interstate) 195 overpass construction, which may contribute to additional traffic delays in the area," Huntoon said. The particular area of concern is on and around Coggeshall Street.
More details about the race, including route information and event updates, can be found on the New Bedford Half Marathon website and the race's Facebook page.
