New Bedford 10-Year-Old’s Dream Is to Meet EDM Star Martin Garrix
At 10 years old, most kids dream of meeting pop stars like Taylor Swift, the Jonas Brothers, or even the latest K-pop sensations. But for New Bedford’s Sophia, her dream meet-and-greet sounds a little more electronic.
Sophia’s musical hero is Martin Garrix, the global EDM superstar who broke into mainstream fame back in 2013 with his massive hit Animals. While many kids her age are still discovering their favorite artists, Sophia already knows exactly who inspires her—and why.
Not only is she a devoted fan, she’s also an avid piano player who spends her practice time learning Garrix’s songs instead of traditional piano staples like Beethoven or modern pop ballads. In fact, Sophia says it was Garrix’s music that inspired her to start piano lessons in the first place.
A Concert She Couldn’t Attend — and a Dream That Took Off
Sophia’s mission to connect with Garrix began when she learned her parents were going to see him live at Agganis Arena on June 18, 2026. She was heartbroken to learn she couldn’t attend due to her age.
“I couldn’t believe my ears,” she tells Fun 107.
Instead of giving up, Sophia took a bold step. She recorded a heartfelt video message asking Garrix for “a huge favor”—adding a second, more kid-friendly show on June 19th.
“I’m asking you ‘In The Name of Love’ (song pun intended) if you could do this,” Sophia said in her message. “It would be a dream come true for me. From a little ‘Animal’ (another song pun intended), Sophia.”
A Letter Sent Straight to the Netherlands
After posting her video plea, Sophia didn’t stop there. She wrote a handwritten letter to Garrix, carefully addressing the envelope to his home country of the Netherlands before sending it off—hoping it might somehow reach her hero.

Her mom, Sara Carvalho, shared the backstory behind Sophia’s love for EDM and the challenges that come with it.
“It’s hard for her to see any of her favorite DJs because they always play at nightclubs or large festivals,” Carvalho explained. “I guess that’s our fault as parents for listening to that type of music lol. We’ve already told her to keep expectations very low.”
Sophia, In Her Own Words
When asked about her favorite Martin Garrix songs, Sophia couldn’t narrow it down to just one.
Her top picks are Told You So featuring Jex and In the Name of Love featuring Bebe Rexha.
As for why she chose Garrix over more typical kid favorites, Sophia put it simply:
“I like Martin Garrix, because he combines piano (which I play) with awesome dance beats.”
If she could ask Garrix anything in the world, she already knows exactly what she’d say:
“1) Can you start playing at places that everyone can go watch you?
2) Could I or we play a duet of ‘High on Life’ on the piano together.”
Whether or not Garrix ever sees her message, Sophia’s story is a reminder that sometimes the biggest dreams come from the smallest fans.
