New Bedford FHC Offers Summer Programs and Seafood Soirée
The New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center and its community partners continue to offer interesting and insightful programs about the fishing industry and the people involved with it.
It will also present a delicious seafood feast in September that serves as the organization's biggest fundraiser.
Programs Manager Joe Ritter visited Townsquare Sunday to preview upcoming events for August and September.
In conjunction with AHA! Night on the second Thursday of every month, the Fishing Heritage Center will host free walking tours of the New Bedford Waterfront. Ritter said the tours will run at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on August 8.
"These tours offer an inside perspective on how a fishing fleet operates, and how they interact with all the support industries along the waterfront," Ritter said.
You can pre-register at the New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center website or by calling (508) 993-8894.
The FHC will host a presentation on August 28 at about the F/V Vigiliance by Dan Eilertsen and Gary Golas. The Vigiliance is one of the newest fishing vessels in the fleet.
The program begins at 7 p.m. There is a $5 admission for this event.
State officials are currently studying seven proposals for the future use of the New Bedford State Pier. The Fishing Heritage Center has joined with BASE Seafood Auction in submitting one of those plans. The proposal calls for relocating the auction to the State Pier, along with a seafood market and a satellite office of the FHC.
"The goal of this proposal is to bring people to the waterfront, so they can understand New Bedford's position in the global economy, and how New Bedford continues to be one of the most profitable and successful fishing ports in the nation," Ritter said.
State officials are expected to announce their decisions by the fall or sooner.
The Seafood Soirée is a great way to close out the summer in New Bedford. The event is the Fishing Heritage Center's biggest fundraiser and is scheduled for Tuesday, September 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Cisco Brewers in the South End of New Bedford. Enjoy delicious seafood prepared by the areas most talented chefs, auctions, music and more. Tickets are now available online.
