NEW BEDFORD (1420 WBSM) – A Dartmouth man with an extensive criminal record and a previous bank robbery conviction was arrested this week by New Bedford Police for allegedly robbing another bank in the city.

According to police, Mark Demelo, 47, of Dartmouth was arrested on multiple charges after an alleged robbery of the Taunton Federal Credit Union branch at 480 Rockdale Avenue.

New Bedford Police said Demelo “has an extensive criminal history with previous convictions for breaking and entering, resisting arrest, and assault and battery."

Demelo was sentenced in 2019 to four to five and a half years in state prison for the March 2018 robbery of the BankFive on County Street in New Bedford.

Police were called to Taunton Federal Credit Union on Monday, September 26 for a report of a robbery in progress. They said they arrived to find that the suspect, later identified as Demelo, is alleged to have “walked up to a teller and demanded money.” Police said after receiving cash, the suspect fled on foot.

Demelo was located at his residence following a BOLO and was taken into custody with help from Dartmouth Police, the NBPD said.

He faces charges of unarmed robbery, resisting arrest, assault and battery with a dangerous
weapon, assault and battery on a police officer, and putting fear in a person for stealing.
