New Bedford’s Cafe Mimo Unveils Mouthwatering Portuguese Fries
During a recent visit to Cafe Mimo in New Bedford’s North End, I was all set to indulge in some grilled octopus, craving a proper authentic Portuguese meal.
Little did I know, a delightful twist awaited me.
As I prepared to order, the restaurant's owner, Scott Ferreira, approached with an unexpected surprise. One of his regular customers, Adam Boutin from New Bedford, had sparked a new culinary creation. Adam and his wife are frequent diners at Mimo, drawn by the irresistible allure of the restaurant's flavorful dishes.
“My wife and I are always here – maybe a little too much – but we can’t seem to stay away; the food is just so good,” Boutin confessed.
One of his favorite orders is the petite Portuguese steak, served with Mimo’s signature Portuguese gravy and crispy hand-cut fries. Inspired by the joy of soaking fries in the leftover gravy, Boutin suggested a special dish to Ferreira: fries smothered in Portuguese gravy and topped with mozzarella cheese, similar to a "Portuguese poutine."
From that moment, I had a strong feeling that “Mimo’s Fries” had the potential to become a new staple on the menu.

Ferreira didn’t stop there, however.
Elevating the dish further, he introduced a version featuring Mimo’s creamy Mozambique sauce. The chefs expertly smothered the hand-cut fries in this rich sauce, added melted cheese, and created the ultimate appetizer or side dish to share.
On a cold winter day, while soup might traditionally be the comfort food of choice, one bite of these specialty fries is enough to change your mind. The warmth and flavor packed into each fry make it a perfect indulgence to brighten any chilly day.
Whether you’re a regular or a first-timer, Mimo’s new creation is a must-try, bringing comfort, flavor and a touch of innovation to the heart of New Bedford.
