NEW BEDFORD — Just three days after receiving final federal approval, COVID-19 vaccines for kids are coming to New Bedford.

City officials announced that starting Friday, some vaccination clinics will provide the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children aged 5-11 years old.

CDC officials approved the use of the vaccine for that age group on Tuesday.

Kids aged 12 and older have been eligible for the shot since this spring.

The first vaccination clinic for younger children in New Bedford will take place at PAACA at 360 Coggeshall St. on Friday from 1 to 5 p.m.

Another clinic for residents aged 5+ will take place on Monday, Nov. 8 from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Andrea McCoy Recreation Center, 181 Hillman St.

Older kids and adults will also be able to receive the shot at these clinics, with adults able to choose between J&J, Moderna, or Pfizer vaccines (based on availability.)

No appointments are needed to get the jab.

Clinics are now also offering CDC-approved booster shots for eligible recipients.

Other upcoming clinics include a Saturday clinic at Riverside Park from 12 to 5 p.m., which will not be offering the pediatric vaccine.

Two more clinics for those aged 12 and over will take place on Tuesday at the Greater New Bedford Community Health Center, 9 - 3 p.m. and the former Fire Station 11 on Brock Avenue from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

In-home vaccinations are also available by appointment for elderly residents or those not able to travel to a clinic.

To schedule an in-home vaccination with the New Bedford Health Department, call 508-991-6199 during business hours.

City health officials are urging unvaccinated residents to get their first shot as soon as possible ahead of the upcoming holiday season.
