Ever come across something that leaves you completely stumped? That was me over the weekend.

On Saturday, April 2, Fun 107 and our sister station WBSM teamed up with the United Way of Greater New Bedford for the spring edition of the Hunger Heroes Food Drive. Volunteers gathered at the Buttonwood Park warming house to collect donated non-perishable food for local kids and families who could use the help.

While there, I noticed something hanging from a tree by the pond.

It was a tiny, white Nike baby shoe and it was fairly new, if not in mint condition. Someone had torn a piece of cloth from a shirt or an article of clothing and tied the shoe to a branch about 5 feet off the ground.

There was no note attached or indication of the meaning behind the shoe, which only confused me more.

After putting on my thinking cap, these are the only logical explanations that could fit this odd display:

  1. A passer-by found this shoe and decided to string it up in case someone was looking for it. The shoe could have easily fallen out of a stroller or off a child in a stroller.
  2. Could this be a sentimental memorial someone made for a lost child? It's right by the water, where people feed the ducks, and could have been a special spot for a family.
  3. Back in the day, shoes on telephone wires marked meeting spots. The fact that this is a child's shoe is a bit odd, but could it mark a gathering spot for people in the know?

As of now, that's all I can come up with, but hopefully, someone can give me direction or even answers as to why a baby's shoe is tied tightly (as if the person who put it there didn't want anyone to just pull it down) with a piece of ripped cloth rather than a strong piece of rope or by the laces.
