Middleboro Police Identify Suspect in Shooting Incident

MIDDLEBORO — Middleboro Police have identified the suspect in a shooting incident near Route 28 and Evergreen Drive earlier this morning.

Raymond Gibson, 55, of Falmouth was arrested in connection to the shooting this morning that resulted in area residents being told to shelter in place for over an hour, police said.

Officers had responded to a report of shots fired just after 9 a.m. near a Massachusetts Department of Transportation public works facility.

The suspect had fled on foot into nearby woods.

According to police, no injuries were reported during the incident, but two vehicles were struck with gunfire.

A man later identified as Gibson was spotted lying on the ground in the woods at around 11:30 a.m. by a Middleboro Police officer.

Authorities placed the man under arrest and seized a .357 revolver that was found on the ground near where he was located.

Police said Gibson is charged with discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building and near a highway, disturbing the peace, and two counts of malicious destruction to a vehicle.

He is expected to be arraigned today at Wareham District Court.

Although Gibson had a valid license to carry a firearm and the weapon seized was registered in his name, police said his license has been suspended pending review by the Falmouth Police.

Police said at this time no specific individuals or groups seem to have been targeted in the incident.

The suspect's motive is still under investigation.

"We're extremely thankful that no one was injured in this incident," Middleboro Police Chief Joseph Perkins said. "This was not an easy response given the heavy rain from the storm and it was great work by our officer who spotted the suspect in the woods, leading to his arrest."

Middleboro police were assisted by a number of state and local departments including fire and SWAT crews, state police, FBI, and Lakeville and Carver police.
