Today marks my 29th time around the sun. With each passing year, the anticipation of a birthday celebration changes, and let’s just say I didn’t exactly jump out of bed this morning with excitement. But an unexpected visitor to the studio this morning gave me the excitement I was looking for.

It was a pleasure to start my birthday with the fellow birthday girl, Maddy Reedy of Mattapoisett, who turns 8 today.

Meeting Maddy filled my heart. Not just because of her sweet smile, but because of the friendly reminder she gave me of just how magical birthdays can be. As she walked into the studio, with her silver crown, birthday pin and giddy laughter, her energy washed over me. It was at that moment that it felt like a true birthday.

Maddy has a ballet show today, and when I asked what she wants to be when she grows up, she replied, “a famous ballet dancer.”

Her presence in the studio was the perfect gift for me, and I decided to give her a gift the only way I know how; by passing over the microphone and letting her speak to the masses.

Maddy took over “birthday duty” by wishing a Happy Birthday to other June 10 babies on the SouthCoast, and even gave me a special shoutout, too.

It was a full-on birthday party in the studio this morning, and it was the perfect start to my 29th year.

Happy Birthday, Maddy the ballerina!

Love, your fellow birthday buddy Maddie.

LOOK: Things from the year you were born that don't exist anymore

The iconic (and at times silly) toys, technologies, and electronics have been usurped since their grand entrance, either by advances in technology or breakthroughs in common sense. See how many things on this list trigger childhood memories—and which ones were here and gone so fast you missed them entirely.
