Chances are that at this point in your week you have been out to eat at least once.

Not hard to do with all the amazing restaurants across the SouthCoast, but it’s also something Massachusetts seems to do more than most states.

In a recent study from LendingTree.com, Massachusetts residents were ranked 5th in the nation for spending the most on dining out.

They found folks in the Commonwealth spent on average sound $4,600 per year on eating out, with Rhode Island not far behind at #8 spending $4,400 per year on purchased meals.

Overall New England is a pretty generous area for those working in the food industry. New Hampshire was the state that tips the most overall, giving an average of 16.07% tip when eating out.

Vermont, Rhode Island and Maine all cracked the top ten tippers list too at 9.31%, 8.54% and 8.18% respectively.

Massachusetts wasn’t terrible at tipping, just not as generous as the rest of its neighboring states. Averaging 7.26% tip when dining out, Massachusetts did rank #14 when compared to every U.S. state.

Utah ranked last in the country with an embarrassing average of 4.09%. Definitely not a state where you want a restaurant job.

Clearly among New Englanders Massachusetts could step up its game. Something to think about next time you head out to eat, which stats show is probably soon.
