Massachusetts Restaurant’s Polaroid Wall Turns Memories Into Donations in New Bedford
There is something about a Polaroid photo that a cell phone picture just cannot replace. Maybe it is the way it develops right in front of you. Maybe it is the imperfect lighting and blurry smiles, or maybe it is because you only get one shot to capture the moment. At Cultivator Shoals in downtown New Bedford, those little snapshots are becoming much more than memories.
The restaurant’s new owners, Nicky and Jason Frakes, recently launched a simple idea to give back to the community that takes care of them. For $7, guests can take a Polaroid picture, pin it to the wall, and become part of what Nicky hopes will eventually cover the entire restaurant from floor to ceiling. Better yet, every single dollar raised is donated to New Bedford’s local police and fire departments.
After just a couple of weeks, the wall is already starting to tell its own story. Couples, friends, families, coworkers and complete goofballs have all left their mark, striking silly poses, sharing hugs and making memories that will now live on inside the Union Street hotspot. There is no judgment, no pressure and no “perfect” picture, just good vibes and a chance to be part of something bigger.
A Wall Built on Memories and Gratitude
“I want the restaurant covered,” Nicky said with a smile, gesturing toward the growing collection of Polaroids scattered across the walls. It is an ambitious goal, but if the early response is any indication, it may not take long before there is hardly an empty space left.

The charitable idea is also deeply personal for the owners. Jason Frakes works as a dispatcher for Eversource’s emergency gas department, giving him a firsthand look at the unpredictable situations first responders face every day.

That connection inspired the couple to make sure the project gives back to the men and women who help keep New Bedford safe.
A Picture Worth More Than a Thousand Words
Cultivator Shoals has also introduced a daily discounted menu for local first responders as another small way of saying thank you. Pair that with the Polaroid wall, and the restaurant is quickly becoming a place where giving back is just as important as the food and drinks.

In a world where most photos disappear into a camera roll and are forgotten, these snapshots are different. They stay on the wall, become part of the story, and with every click of the camera, they help support the people who answer the call when New Bedford needs them most.
