Boston.com recently reported, "1 in 3 families in Massachusetts can't count on their next meal." The site cites a Greater Boston Food Bank report that "reveals that hunger in the state persists amid growing concerns about economic security."

If you accept the Greater Boston Food Bank's findings, you might be alarmed to know that Governor Maura Healey's administration continues to pour taxpayer money into the black hole known as the emergency shelter system.

In addition to Massachusetts residents, the shelter program serves immigrants, many of whom are in the country illegally.

Fox News reported, "Massachusetts taxpayers are forking out around $1,000 per person per week under the (shelter) program."

"Massachusetts taxpayers are on course to spend $1 billion on the state's emergency shelter program for FY25, with migrant families making up a significant share of those receiving assistance," reported Fox, citing a bi-weekly update from the Massachusetts Executive Office for Housing and Livable Communities.

The Boston Herald reported the Healey Administration has spent $830 million this fiscal year, which ends June 30, with $1 billion in total costs projected. The paper stated $572 million has gone to direct shelter costs, with $149 million spent on other services, including "Home Base, National Guard, etc."

The Healey Administration says fewer migrants are living in emergency shelters as they are moved into the Home Base program, which provides a rent-free apartment for up to two years.

The Executive Office for Housing and Livable Communities told the Herald, "Roughly 90% of eligible emergency assistance shelter applicants are 'Massachusetts residents." Fox reported that designation may be applied to immigrants to qualify them for the shelter program.

According to some accounts, Massachusetts has spent an estimated $2 billion on housing migrants since 2023.
