President Joe Biden said "there are more important things going on" than the crisis at the U.S. southern border, but officials here in deep blue Massachusetts are growing more concerned about the flow of migrants making their way north.

Outgoing Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker recently declared a "humanitarian crisis" and asked the legislature to approve $139 million to cover housing and education costs associated with the influx of migrants that are making their way to Massachusetts.

The legislative leadership quickly dispatched Baker's request for emergency funds to committee limbo, where it will gather dust until after the holidays.

So much for the humanitarian crisis.

The State House News Service reported that Boston alone "has welcomed hundreds of new arrivals in recent months, part of a broader migration trend affecting Massachusetts and other states."

The Immigrant Family Services Institute in Mattapan "has processed more than 6,000 intakes of new families since September 2021, many of whom struggle to find somewhere to live."

Elizabeth Sweet, executive director of the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, said she expects a wave of new immigrant arrivals to continue "given the trends at the border."

The SHNS reported other challenges facing the Commonwealth are placing migrant children in classrooms and "connecting immigrants to legal services to help them navigate a complex judiciary."

The New Bedford School Department says as many as 40 languages are spoken at New Bedford High School. The department must provide education to all students regardless of their immigration status – and the cost to taxpayers.

Biden has not visited the border as president, and according to Fox News.com, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre dismissed recent Republican border visits as "political stunts."
