The National Governors Association has a new leadership team that includes Massachusetts Democratic Gov. Maura Healey. However, according to published reports, the NGA appears to be in disarray.

Why Did Healey Skip the Summer Meeting?

Her office reported last week that Healey would skip the National Governors Association summer meeting in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The office offered no explanation for why Healey, a vocal critic of the Trump Administration, would sit out the meeting.

Maine Democrat Gov. Janet Mills also opted not to attend the summer NGA meeting.

Healey Elected to NGA Executive Committee

Springfield-based WWLP-TV reported, "The National Governors Association (NGA) has elected Maura Healey to its Executive Committee, which supervises the association's functions and priorities."

Healey, along with eight other governors, was elected to serve on the Executive Committee on Saturday. They include the elected governors of Oklahoma, Maryland, Hawaii, Indiana, Louisiana, New Mexico, Tennessee and Colorado.

"The leadership of governors has never been more important than in this moment," Healey said in a statement. "We are working every single day to deliver for our residents on the issues that matter most in their lives – affordability, jobs, housing, education, health care and public safety."

The NGA's meeting was not without controversy.

Democratic Governors Step Back From NGA

ABC News reported that two prominent Democrats, Gov. Laura Kelly of Kansas and Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, are "stepping away" from the NGA, citing a "lack of pushback to Trump administration policies and some recent threats to state funding and operations."

Stitt Responds to Democratic Concerns

Incoming NGA chair, Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt of Oklahoma, is reportedly "disappointed" that some Democratic members may withhold their dues and cease participating in the bipartisan group.

"We shouldn't be playing politics like they do in Washington, D.C.," Stitt told Fox News Digital.
